Tampa Museum of Art Launches Encaustic Program with Shelley Jean & Gina White

The Tampa Museum of Art has officially opened a new chapter in its education programming: a dedicated encaustic program. To mark the launch, encaustic artists Shelley Jean and Gina White led the inaugural workshop, Studio 55 | Encaustic Explorations, held June 30 – July 3, 2025, in the Museum’s Vinik Family Education Center.

By introducing encaustic into its regular lineup, the Tampa Museum of Art expands the ways artists and the public can engage with this historically rich yet contemporary medium. The program reflects the Museum’s commitment to diverse artistic practices and to making innovative education opportunities available to the community.

Shelley Jean and Gina White’s workshop set the tone for what promises to be an exciting ongoing encaustic program at the Museum.

About Encaustic

Encaustic is an ancient painting process that utilizes molten beeswax, damar resin, and pigments. The Egyptians and Greeks used this medium to paint murals, funeral portraits, and ships. Encaustic today is used in a more contemporary way through paintings, photography, sculpture, and mixed media.
